The quiet kitchen

The quiet kitchen

With kitchens located in the heart of our living areas, noise levels can be a big issue. Abode’s kitchen design expert, Nicky Claridge of NC Design, introduces some of her favourite quiet kitchen technology.

Few places have more hustle and bustle than family kitchens at dinnertime. Modern living means the kitchen is the hub of the house and is often integrated into living areas; adding the TV and conversation to the melting pot of noise and comings and goings.

When hosting an event, we often cook while guests enjoy a drink at the breakfast bar and trying to work and socialise in this environment can be stressful. We all know that sense of relief when the rangehood is finally turned off.

None of us would want to be without the appliances that create noise in the kitchen and luckily there are some excellent products you can choose from to reduce the impact of noise and create a calmer, quieter kitchen.

If you’ve ever had to pause your movie to boil the jug, so you don’t miss a crucial plot point, you’ll appreciate the InSinkErator MultiTap. This single tap encompasses a mixer providing filtered drinking water, warm water, plus instant near-boiling water for hot drinks. Choosing a MultiTap option not only eliminates a significant source of noise in the kitchen but also declutters the benchtop with no more need for a kettle.

We have all become accustomed to the convenience of the waste disposal unit, but the noise can be disruptive and unpleasant. Developed to run up to 60 per cent more quietly than a standard unit, the InSinkErator Evolution 200 Food Waste Disposer provides an excellent alternative option for any new kitchen. With the ability to process 99 per cent of food waste including avocado stones, bones and even tea bags with strings, there’s no need to compromise on performance.

The single biggest factor in kitchen noise tends to be the rangehood, an appliance we can’t live without. However, when they’re up and running the sound can be deafening. As a quiet alternative that still packs a punch, I recommend the Schweigen Silent Rangehood to my clients. The German manufactured motor is positioned remotely, virtually eliminating noise while maintaining a powerful performance at 3200 cubic metres of air extracted per hour. Whatever your kitchen design, there is a style to suit with options including under-mount, wall-mount, island, and outdoor.

To maximise the enjoyment of your kitchen and living spaces, it’s worth considering noise as a major factor when purchasing the appliances that you will use for many years to come. Opting for models with reduced noise, or that allow you to eliminate the noise all together – such as the MultiTap – will go a long way towards creating a quiet kitchen and a more peaceful household.
