Everyday Luxury
It’s the room where we begin each and every day, preparing ourselves to face the world, and Oakleys’ in-house bathroom designer Karen Kim believes, for this reason, it’s worthwhile investing in making our bathroom something a bit special.
When building a brand new home or renovating to upgrade an existing bathroom, working in a small area that must function efficiently as well as look great, presents an array of challenges. Expert bathroom designer Karen Kim from Oakleys Plumbing Supplies has been working with clients for twenty plus years, helping them to make the most of the available space and create a sanctuary in their home that can be enjoyed every day. We spoke to Karen about the benefits of working with a skilled designer to assist with bathroom design.
What kinds of projects can you help with? We can help with anything from a simple refresh that involves replacing a shower or vanity, to a brand new build or extensive renovation. I specialise in renovations and the particular challenges that come with working in an existing space with existing plumbing etc.
Why would you recommend consulting a designer? A designer brings years of experience and expert product knowledge, giving them the ability to come up with smart solutions to meet the clients’ specific needs and fully utilise the available space.
How does the design process begin? Often clients will come into the showroom looking for ideas, and that’s where the conversation starts. Some bring their room measurements or plans in, or often I will make an appointment to go to the house to measure up and understand the space we are working with. Initially, I look at the layout, considering the overall area, including the location of windows, doors and plumbing to assess what configurations could work. Sometimes there is only one option, but often there are a variety of possible configurations.
Can you also help with getting the work done? Yes, along with our design service, we can also project manage the bathroom build from start to finish, ensuring everything goes smoothly to deliver a bathroom that exceeds the clients’ expectations. We also have existing relationships with top tradespeople who will deliver quality workmanship every step of the way.
Are there any common pitfalls with bathrooms? Going in, it’s essential to know what existing plumbing there is and if there are any limitations. Large rain shower heads are currently popular, but without adequate water pressure, the results can be disappointing. Knowing what to look out for and understanding the products really helps when advising people what will work for them.
What’s your favourite part of the bathroom design process? Working alongside our clients to find a great solution for them is a fun part of the job, and of course, it’s very satisfying to complete a beautiful bathroom that will be enjoyed for many years to come.

Colour - The popularity of all white bathrooms is waning, making way for layers of tonal colour and accents such as basins and tapware in matte black, brass, nickel and copper finishes.
Natural materials - Gone is the stark monochrome, making way for the depth of colour and warmth of timber, and the permanence of stone. Embrace nature’s imperfections for an earthier feel.
Soft lines - Curves are beginning to edge out sleek, sharp lines. Expect to see oval basins, curvaceous baths and rounded mirrors.
