Modern flames

Modern flames

We get the lowdown on gas fires from Escea’s Architectural Advisor, Richard Miller

Available from April, the DS1400 from Escea, will take away everything you don’t need for a gas fire that is truly frameless.

Why should I consider a gas fire?
A gas fireplace is a great choice if you love the romance and look of a fireplace, but lead a busy life. A modern gas fireplace gives you all the appeal of a real fireplace, with the convenience of turning it on from a button (or from your smartphone). It’s low-maintenance, clean and instant.

How does energy efficiency come into play with a gas fire?
Escea fires are different because they are glass fronted with sealed combustion chambers. No room air is used and this produces more heat for every dollar spent on gas.
We recently surveyed customers who had previously owned a woodburner and replaced it with an Escea gas fire. The results told us that most people found the annual cost of running the new gas fire was the same or less than their wood fire.

What trends are we seeing in fireplaces at the moment?
In terms of aesthetics, modern gas fireplaces are becoming more and more minimalist. Proudly designed and made in New Zealand, Escea fires combine high-tech innovation with sleek, uncomplicated design. Our latest release, the Escea DS1400, is truly frameless and has a large glass viewing area. We have found that what people love most about a fire are the flames, so we have stripped everything else back for our most minimalist fire yet.
We’re also seeing an increase in demand for outdoor fires. This reflects the growing popularity of outdoor rooms and outdoor kitchens.

Escea’s EF5000 Outdoor Gas Fireplace takes indoor comforts outside.

What do I need to know when buying and installing an outdoor gas fireplace?
Outdoor gas fireplace installation is relatively simple because there is no flue required. You need gas though! South Island homes get their gas through LPG bottles, and a gas fitter is needed to install and set up the gas line for you.

Tell us a bit about your Outdoor Wood Cooking Fire.
Our EW5000 Outdoor Wood Cooking Fire has a large cooking plate, making it ideal for BBQs. It needs to be enclosed in non-combustible masonry, stone, concrete or brickwork. Escea can provide a ready-to-build steel frame enclosure, which can be finished with any fireproof material.
