Ceiling fans get smart for 2025, says Vanessa Craig of Jet Black Fan Systems.
What are you noticing in your industry?
We are seeing a big movement toward smart, energy-efficient airflow solutions in homes and commercial spaces. Homeowners are increasingly interested in smart ceiling fans and integrated ventilation systems
that automatically adjust for comfort and energy savings. Commercial projects are also following suit, with businesses wanting systems that create a comfortable environment while keeping energy costs down and a broadened understanding of the product’s life cycle and lifespan.
What do you like about this shift?
The shift towards “smart” is exciting because it makes life easier while also saving on energy bills! People are realising they can have both comfort and efficiency with a bit of tech on their side.
People want healthier indoor air quality, comfort that doesn’t break the bank, and the peace of mind that comes from using reliable smart technology. The convenience of managing a fan from your smartphone or even through voice commands adds a cool factor that fits seamlessly into modern homes.
How is this trend being adopted?
For homeowners, incorporating smart airflow solutions can be as simple as upgrading to a smart ceiling fan. These systems are often plug-and-play, so you don’t need to be super tech-savvy to get started.
Smart fans are designed to work in harmony with air conditioning, saving an expected 30 per cent on energy consumption. In winter, fans help bring warm air downward, making a room feel cosy without cranking up the heat. This year- round adaptability is better for your pocket and the environment.
We are working on a few high-end residential projects where our more premium smart fans are part of the core design, creating spaces that look beautiful and stay comfortable with minimal input. As for our commercial projects, we’re installing smart airflow systems in schools, offices and marae, where the key focus is creating environments that are comfortable, energy-efficient and adaptable. These spaces all benefit from technology that automatically adjusts airflow based on room occupancy or temperature, keeping classrooms, meeting areas and communal spaces consistently comfortable.
Can you tell us more about sustainability?
Consumers today need to work harder than ever to cut through greenwashing to truly understand what sustainable cooling options mean and how to make a positive impact. It’s not just about saving power; we also need to think about the materials used, the durability of the product (often reflected in the warranty period), and what happens at the end of its life. While it can be tempting to choose a cheaper option, this often isn’t the most eco-friendly choice. A sustainable product balances efficiency with eco- conscious design, helping to create a lasting positive impact.
