An architecturally designed Christchurch home with contemporary elegance is now on the market with Harcourts Holmwood.

Plenty of thought went into perfecting the concept, says Sheppard & Rout director Tim Dagg. “The original design for the house was for a single-level, three-bedroom house with two simple gable forms and a flat roof between. The site was sold with those consented plans, and the current owners approached us
to amend the design to include two more bedrooms, a media room and a swimming pool. So we came up with this current design.”

In a high-end location, it was essential to create a house that was appropriate to the site, says Tim. It doesn’t dominate the site; it’s private and secluded, and has a timeless feel.

“Material selection was for low maintenance, hence the white bricks from Canterbury Clay Bricks,” he says. “The white form was balanced with the dark aluminium joinery and louvres to create a cohesive palette of materials. Light-stained cedar was used on the garage, entry and street fencing to provide a warm balance to the black and white house form.”

For Tim, the standout of the house is the entertaining area: the kitchen, dining and living spaces with high ceilings, opening out to the terrace and pool.

The current owners have enjoyed living here: “It’s peaceful and warm, and surprisingly quiet,” they say. “We love having the gym and sauna. The location is fantastic for the kids to get to school, and it’s close to Merivale Mall and lots of bars and restaurants in Elmwood, Fendalton and Merivale. We feel very safe in the house, and it’s really spacious.”

They loved it so much that they are, in fact, working with Sheppard & Rout on their next build.
