Wall finishes

Jason Roberts, director of Proudfoot Plastering in Christchurch, tells us about the beauty of a one-of-a-kind look for your walls.

What is new for our walls this year?
Interior plaster finishes are trending right now for their ability to add depth, texture and sophistication to spaces and as an alternative to painted Gib walls or wallpaper. There is a trend for bespoke finishes – on both exteriors and interiors. The concrete look is very popular at the moment, which is hand-applied and very durable. We are also using clay, lime or other natural materials to achieve either a textured matt lustre or a highly polished, luxurious finish. People are getting excited about the fact that these walls are bespoke, one-off and crafted to their own specifications.

Why do you like it?
I like the challenge. These types of projects are never straightforward. Matching the style and texture to a very specific idea or picture the client has seen is a very creative and rewarding process.

What are you working on right now?
We have a few projects on the go at the moment. One client was tired of his white- painted walls and is looking forward to the calmness that a natural material wall coating will bring. We have another who would like the fireplace to look like a concrete monolith, but doesn’t want it too dark. And that’s the beauty of the materials we use – we can tint them to suit any colour palette we are working with.

Tell us about Proudfoot Plastering
I started working at Greg Proudfoot Plastering more than 25 years ago, and was the project manager for the last 12 of those years. When Greg was looking at retiring, my wife Susan and I took up the challenge of business ownership. We look forward to continuing the same high standards and attention to detail.
